Build.com is an online home improvement retailer owned by Ferguson Enterprises. It sells bathroom, kitchen and lighting hardware, appliances and other supplies. The company is headquartered in Chico, California.

History

In 1999, during the dot-com bubble, the company was launched as FaucetDirect by Christian Friedland and David Boctor, former classmates at California State University, Chico.

As of 2006, Friedland owned 52% of the company. He turned down venture capital and instead sold the company to Ferguson plc, then called Wolseley UK, for $35 million. Woseley bought the Build.com domain name from David Berman and rebranded the company as Build.com in April 2010.

In October 2015, Build.com / Ferguson Enterprises acquired Living Direct.

In late 2016, Christian Friedland left Build to focus full time on Power for Puerto Rico, a nonprofit organization raising money to buy generators for those devastated by Hurricane Maria earlier that year.

The company expanded its Chico offices in September 2018 by relocating 70 employees.

During the pandemic, the expanded office was closed and the build workforce went fully remote. Post pandemic the office remains mostly empty with the primary workforce based out of Atlanta Georgia and Newport News Virginia. A contingent of remote brand managers remain in Chico. The future of the Chico office building is uncertain.
